How to Apply for and Enroll in an Online High School Program

By: Jordin Frey

Online high school enrollment can be a great choice for people who are looking to go back to school to get their high school diploma.  Many find that their local in-person school isn’t the right fit for them. Whatever the reason, online high school enrollment is easier than ever. Enrolling in an online school just takes a little bit of planning and research to find the best fit. Once you are ready, you fill out the high school application online to get the ball rolling.

What Should I Do When I Want to Enroll in an Online School?

If you've decided to enroll in an online high school, you might wonder how to get started. It's important to start by learning about your options. You will find that there are many different programs that serve different goals. Every student is different. Some distance learning schools may be better for a student than others. This can depend on the way the school is set up and the types of programs offered. It’s important to talk to the schools you're considering. Ask questions about the coursework, the credentials and teaching experience of the staff, and accreditation. Accreditation is the most important thing to look for in an online school because it means that the school has met the basic educational standards required by an accrediting body. If an online school is not accredited, it's best to look elsewhere in order to ensure that you're getting a good education. After all, online schools cost money, and it’s important you receive a proper education for your investment.

How to Apply for High School Online

Once you've found the online high school you like, you need to see what they require from you so you can apply. All schools will need some documents from you in order to complete the high school online enrollment process. One example is high school transcripts from your old school (if you already completed some high school courses). Your old transcripts help your new school determine what course credit they can take from the old high school, and what course credit you still need to complete. After all, if you already have some high school credits under your belt, it would be nice to get credit for them.

Keep in mind that every school is a little bit different. Some may offer an online high school enrollment anytime. This is called open enrollment. Others may have strict deadlines for high school online enrollment and require you to mail some of your application materials to them.

A school's enrollment process may help you decide whether or not you want to enroll with them. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable about the enrollment process or you find yourself second-guessing the school's program, it might be best to look for a different school. With so many options, there's sure to be a program out there that's the right fit for you.
