Step 1: Earn Your HS Diploma or Equivalent
Step 2: Get Formal Training through an Accredited InstitutionWhile formal training is not always required, it can be helpful in seeking employment in this field. Personal Fitness Training Certification programs are typically available at the certificate levels, with online and on-campus options available. Courses typically cover topics like fitness evaluation, anatomical terms, exercise physiology, and nutrition. Step 3: Obtain CertificationAlthough not always required, many employers, fitness facilities, and clients prefer to work with fitness trainers who are certified. Certification shows them you have the knowledge to perform well in a role as a Personal Fitness Trainer and have mastered nationally-recognized health and fitness standards. (USCI’s Certification Program includes the preparation and cost of for the National Council on Strength & Fitness [NCSF] Certified Personal Trainer exam.) Step 4: Start WorkingMany employers will offer on-the job training, however the employee must prove mastery of nationally recognized health and fitness standards. Some Certified Personal Fitness Trainers will also form their own businesses helping individuals to meet their health goals.
