Becoming an EMR (Electronic Medical Records) Specialist typically requires a High School diploma or GED, and training through an accredited school. Do your research to make sure the school is accredited! After finishing your EMR program, your next step is to take and pass the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) certification exam, given by the National Healthcaeer Association (NHA).

A Day in the Life of an EMR Specialist

EMR Specialists gather, review and organize patient health data and enter this information into electronic health records systems. They ensure the quality, accuracy and confidentiality of the patient’s healthcare information. This information includes medical histories, physician exams, symptoms, test results, treatment plans, insurance information and other related healthcare information. Most EMR Specialists work in hospitals, doctor’s offices and nursing homes.

  • Analytical Skills – Electronic Medical Records Specialists need to recognize and follow medical records and diagnoses to know how to properly code a patient’s medical records.
  • Integrity – Patient information is required by law to be kept confidential. Exceptional ethics and responsibility are a must to protect patient confidentiality.
