By: Katelyn Fahrenbruck Weston

So, you graduated from high school and are receiving a high school diploma - Congratulations! This is an incredible milestone that anyone should be proud to accomplish.

But wait, there’s an issue! You want to celebrate your achievement, but you chose to be homeschooled instead of attending a traditional school with the usual graduation ceremony. How will you bring your friends, family, and loved ones together to enjoy your special day?

Throwing the Best High School Graduation Party (for 1)!

Here’s a few tips on honoring the hard work you or your student has accomplished - outside the traditional graduation ceremony.

Graduation Ideas for Homeschoolers
  • Have friends and family create short videos of encouragement
  • Name the student Valedictorian and make them give a speech about what they learned
  • Celebrate their success with their favorite foods - no need to make something everyone enjoys!
  • Create mock programs - no need to include the names of hundreds of other students!
  • Do “Class Superlatives,” but with friends and family instead of other students! Aunt Judy will be thrilled to finally get voted “Best Hair!”

Honor The Hard Work

As an online, homeschool, or otherwise nontraditional high school student, it can be tough to feel like your work is appreciated. Getting a high school diploma is a big achievement, and doing it through your own special effort is an incredible thing to celebrate. When you’re a nontraditional student, or in an atypical setting, you’re not only learning high school subjects, but lifelong skills like self motivation, time management, and other good habits.

Having a high school diploma opens many doors to better jobs or continued education. Take time to enjoy the opportunities you have given yourself!

  • Treat Yourself: A special meal, a coffee drink, or a shopping spree to kick of the next chapter of your life!
  • Journal It Out: Write down the things you’re feeling, the things you’re most proud of, or the things you’re most excited for.
  • Share The Good News: Don’t be afraid to tell your loved ones how proud you are of yourself!
  • Keep Up The Momentum: Use those incredible skills you’ve learned to push yourself into whatever comes next.

Your achievements are incredible. A high school diploma will change so many aspects of your life. Go throw a party - you’ve earned it!
