10 Success tips for learning online

By: Jenn Hall | December 2025

Online education is a great alternative to a traditional classroom. Not only do online programs provide greater flexibility and accessibility, but they are often more affordable, too.

That said, online learning isn’t for everyone. It requires a higher level of personal accountability, time management, and commitment to the process. To help you succeed, here are ten proven strategies to make your online learning experience smooth.

#1: Create a dedicated study space.

A clean, distraction-free zone will create a calmer environment that’s more conducive to increased focus time.

#2: Treat your online studies like an in-person class

You may not have a physical class to attend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat your online studies like you would an in-person class. Show up on time and do your best to be present and prepared.

#3: Stick to a schedule

Schedule your study time. Add “appointments” to your calendar to complete lectures and assignments, study course materials, and submit tests or quizzes. Consistency builds momentum. By scheduling your study time, you will create consistency and accountability for yourself and build momentum in your program.

#4: Limit digital distractions

Let’s face it, the world is noisy, which is not a great thing when you’re trying to study. Silence notifications on your phone or computer, close extra browser tabs or apps, and use focus tools when you need them.

#5: Break tasks down

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you focus on the mountain of tasks ahead of you. But here’s the thing; you don’t need to do it all at once. Break things down into manageable sections and focus on completing each one. Before you know it, you’ll be at the top of your mountain with far less stress.

#6: Actively participate

Ask questions and join discussions ... engagement boosts understanding and retention (and it can help you feel more connected, too)

#7: Seek support, when needed

Don’t be afraid to reach out to your instructor if you’re confused or need some additional support. It’s a sign of strength and commitment to your goals – and they genuinely want to help, so ask for it.

#8: Use your resources

Course materials, study guides, online discussions, tutoring ... these are all resources to help you succeed, so make sure you use them.

#9: Become a time management master

Your time is your most valuable resource and with great time management, you’ll be able to maximize that resource and feel the benefits. Plan your days and weeks, allocating time for work, family obligations, free time, and of course, your studies. Adding this structure into your life will actually give you more freedom and allow you to achieve even more.

#10: Take care of yourself

We are our best selves when we take care of our mind and body. You’ve heard all the advice before, but I’ll say it again ... get some rest, stay hydrated, and move your body. A clear mind learns better, in any environment.

Online education is powerful — and with the right habits, you can absolutely be successful and achieve your goals.
