Kelly’s Success Story

From Nurse to Work-At-Home
Medical Transcriptionist

Kelly had worked hard to become a nurse, but that career didn’t fit her life like she expected. “I had a little girl in daycare, which I hated. And my new daughter had some problems. She was born a little early, so I had to stay home with her.” Kelly needed a career she could do at home, but she was overwhelmed at the thought of going back to school.

That’s when her neighbor, an instructor at U.S. Career Institute, introduced her to the school. Kelly saw that becoming a Medical Transcriptionist would fit her plans and line up with her medical background. “My goal was to stay home with my kids and get paid. Here was a way to do just that.”

“I loved U.S. Career Institute right away,” Kelly said. Her coursework directly applied to her future career. She transcribed actual doctors’ reports and expanded her medical knowledge with every lesson. “I thought the course flowed well and was easy to follow. It was a good experience.”

Balancing school and children was a challenge that Kelly faced head-on. “I studied as I could. Having a new baby made it tough.  But I knew I was doing this for them, too.” The course was self paced so she could take a day off when she wanted to or go faster when she had extra time. Her kids loved having her at home, and she felt successful as a mom and a student.

There were some frustrating days, however. “I was not very technically savvy so learning to work on the computer was difficult. I was glad that I could call my instructor anytime, which really helped me get through the hard parts.” She worked her way through the course, getting closer to a career with each lesson.

Kelly graduated with her Medical Transcription Certificate in less than a year. Two weeks later, she was hired to work from home for a company out of New York. Now, six years later, Kelly has taken her career to a new level and is now a U.S. Career Institute instructor herself. She enjoys helping students achieve as she did.
